Looking for a second opinion, or treatment recommendation
following a spine condition diagnosis?
We offer a MRI review to most insured patients as part of our commitment to patient care. We offer a variety of spine procedures at our New Jersey locations including Freehold, Hainesport, Holmdel, Jersey City, Paramus, Toms River and Woodbridge
What Is an MRI?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a common technology used for diagnosing spine conditions. When patients experience persistent back or neck pain, doctors may order an MRI scan.
Sometimes, the results of an MRI suggest only a minor concern that will go away in days, but symptoms linger. Other times, patients may not be comfortable with the treatment their doctor is suggesting. Whatever the case, getting a second opinion about MRI results from a spine specialist can provide peace of mind.
At NU-Spine, Branko Skovrlj, MD, and his team provide a free review of MRI results to most insured patients for expert second opinions and to discuss alternative treatment plans.
Why Consider an MRI Review in New Jersey?
MRIs provide insight into various concerns with the spine. A doctor may order an MRI if a patient has neck or back pain or problems with spine bones (vertebrae), soft tissues (spinal cord), discs, or nerves. Some symptoms also may suggest a spine condition, prompting the doctor to recommend an MRI. These symptoms include:
- Numbness/tingling in the arms, shoulder, and neck (cervical) or legs (lumbar)
- Bleeding, swelling, infections, and inflammation of vertebrae and soft tissue
- Loss of bladder and bowel control
The MRI technique has been used for years and is considered an exceptionally reliable diagnostic tool. However, patients may not feel confident in the outcomes of an MRI. As such, getting a second opinion on MRI results is essential when diagnosed with a spine condition.
In some cases, a second opinion will simply confirm what an MRI revealed. Even so, many patients feel it is necessary for their assurance. By offering free reviews of MRI results, NU-Spine makes it easy to seek a second opinion without worrying about adding another medical expense.
Patients also may come to NU-Spine for an MRI review even without a diagnosis. Dr. Skovrlj and the team will examine the scans and ask about symptoms. This allows them to make an informed diagnosis of a pain or movement issue.
MRI Review for Guiding Treatment Plans in New Jersey
Treatment for back and neck pain varies significantly, depending on the type and severity of the spine disorder. For minor pain, conservative remedies such as rest and modifying activities, medication, or physical therapy often help. For more severe pain caused by spine conditions, surgery may be necessary.
When patients bring MRI scans to NU-Spine for a free review, Dr. Skovrlj will diagnose the problem. He also may suggest alternative treatment plans that include minimally invasive spine surgery. These procedures help treat all areas of the spine, including cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back), and lumbar and sacrum (lower back). NU-Spine treats the following conditions and more:
Advantages of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery
Being diagnosed with a spine condition is already overwhelming, and surgery can add to that stress. While effective, open neck and back surgery may lead to serious complications, with a long road ahead to recovery. Minimally invasive surgery offers a safe and efficient alternative for patients who cannot undergo open surgery. It also provides the following benefits:
- Decreased risk of infection
- Faster recovery
- Fewer risks of complications
- Reduced muscle and nerve damage
- Less time in the hospital
- No general anesthesia is required (in some cases)
- Decreased blood loss and trauma
- Reduced bruising and scarring
- Pain relief (and less medication for pain relief)
- Enables patients who cannot undergo open surgery to have access to treatment
